Account Safety

Afraid that your items'll get stolen? Fear that your NP will pull a Houdini? Scared that your account will go poof? Well, step right up. We've developed a guide on account safety, and it's chuck-filled with tips on how to stay away from scams, how to pick a good password, and lots of other things. So, let's get started!

The first part to owning a safe account is making a good password. To do this, make sure your password doesn't have any "real" words in it, like monkey, flower, or anything like that. Make it a complicated scramble of numbers and letters, just don't make it so complicated that you can't remember it! Neopets recently made it so you have to include at least one number in your password, which is a good thing. A good password would be something like ooblec58carnishva or something along those lines.

The next step to keeping your account safe is the most important. NEVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, GIVE YOUR PASSWORD TO ANYONE, EVEN IF THEY CLAIM TO BE PART OF THE NEOPETS TEAM OR THAT YOU'LL GET NEOPOINTS OR ITEMS. IT IS A SCAM. There are a lot of nasty people on Neopets, just waiting for you to hand over your password. No matter what claims they may make, NEVER give out your password to ANYBODY. The Neopets Team will NEVER ask for your password.

Of course, after this, you should brand into your head not to visit any shady sites that might have cookie grabbers on them. A cookie grabber is an evil little computer bot that reads your Neopets cookie and gives all your login details for Neopets to them. Never fill out any forms that ask for your password, and if you do happen to visit one of these sites with a cookie grabber or fill out a form, immediately change your password.

If someone tells you to change your email, don't do it. They only ask you to do this so they can request your password and get it emailed directly to them. Be careful, and be alert. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The most common scams are cookie grabbers, email scams, trading post scams, instant messenger scams, and fake login pages. Fake login pages are pages designed to look like a login page, but in reality are an off-neopets site that emails your username and password to the creator. When you log in, ALWAYS check the URL before submitting ANY information and make sure it says neopets.com. NEVER trade items outside of the trading post, and again, NEVER give out your password.

The art of reporting is also a handy little tool you should know about. If you ever are threatened or charmed by a scammer, immediately report them by clicking on "Report Message" on the boards or in neomail.

We hope you'll be able to keep your account safe by following these simple guidelines. Thanks for reading!
